What is Asian Handicap Betting?

Asian Handicap betting in soccer has become very popular in recent years and are one of the favoured markets for professional traders but can also be a little bit confusing for the layman punter to get their heads around. We aim to give you a better understanding so you can get a chance of using these markets to make money.

First of all it is important to know what an Asian handicap looks like in order to identify it. We took a screenshot from Bet365 to use as a real life example;

Asian handicap betting is the expression of the difference in strengths between two teams which ultimately removes the possibility for the draw, giving us a two-way market instead of a three. In this example we can see that the market thinks that the Chelsea will beat Leicester by 2 goals with an implied probability of 54.6%. The minus sign is telling is that Chelsea are the stronger team as we are essentially subtracting this from the starting score to “handicap” them to make a fairer game and provide larger odds on what could be an uncompetitive match. You may also notice that the overround in this market offering is significantly lower at 103% compared to normal 1X2 markets due to the removal of the draw selection, which is why it is often favoured by professsional traders due to the opportunity to make money.

There are three types of Asian handicap line; the half goal variant( as seen above, -1.5), the full goal variant (0, -1, +1, etc..) and the quarter goal variant (-0.25,+0.75, etc..). The half goal variant will be settled will only be settled as a winner or loser as there cannot be half goals in football obviously. In the example above, Chelsea would need to win by 2 or more goals to win and that is the only way they can win this bet. This type of settlement makes this line a little easier to understand. The full goal line is a little more complicated;

This next example shows their is very little difference between the two teams expected in the first half, with Chelsea slight favourites to win the first half with an implied probability of 55.56%. In this case, if you backed Arsenal at 0.0, it could be settled in 3 different ways.

  1. If Arsenal win the first half, your bet wins.
  2. If Arsenal lose the first half, your bet loses.
  3. If the match is tied at half time, then your bet is void.

This is the way that all full goal lines work with Asian handicaps but 0.0 is particularly easy to understand is works the same way as the traditional “Draw – No Bet” market does. A voided bet is a bet where that has its stake returned.

The quarter goal variant can be seen above. The value of the Asian handicap line when shown in this variation is the middle of the two values shown, so here it is +0.25/-0.25. The difference with this bet is that is if you had a 10 unit stake on Arsenal +0.25, what would actually happen is that you would have 5 units on at 0.0 at 1.82 and 5 units on +0.5 at 1.82. Due to this split winnings you can have half wins and half losses. In this case, if the result at the end of the game was a 2-2 draw then you receive a void on the 0.0 line and win on the +0.5 giving your +0.25 bet a half win. Below is a table of all bet results based on handicap line.
